I've been in the market for a leather stamp for some time now, and I finally settled on an acetyl stamp made by Daryl Barberousse in Colorado. After receiving it, I realized I didn't have the proper hammer or hammering surface. For leather stamping, you need a good-sized maul and a slab of marble to hammer on. I found out that you can't simply put a slab of marble on a concrete garage floor and expect the hammering to go smoothly. What you really need is a solid wooden work bench to rest the marble on. The wood suppresses the blow from the maul so that the stamp doesn't bounce when struck. When the stamp bounces, it can cause a double imprint in the leather. I bought a 32 oz. round tapered maul from Barry King. Once I had the proper materials and tools for hammering, I couldn't stop stamping.
